Moss Park Residents in Toronto, housing advocates and community service providers gathered at All Saints Church Community Centre on October 14 for “Claim Our Corner,” calling for deeply affordable housing on a vacant property at 214–230 Sherbourne Street that has remained empty for nearly 20 years.
Organized by 230 Fightback and the Toronto Underhoused and Homeless Union, the gathering included a community meal, speeches and the unveiling of a mural by local artist Moises Frank. Organizers also displayed photographs and statements from neighbourhood residents on the barbed-wire fence surrounding the property.
The event came as 35 neighbourhood agencies urged the City of Toronto and property owner KingSett Capital to negotiate the site’s acquisition for permanent social and supportive housing. The agencies also called on the city to consider expropriation if an agreement cannot be reached within a reasonable timeframe.
