In 1981, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) engaged in a 42-day strike that resulted in significant improvements to maternity leave benefits. The strike led to the establishment of 17 weeks of paid maternity leave at 93% of full wages, setting a new standard for parental benefits and expanded leave for new fathers and adoptive parents.
