A Women’s Labour History Walking Tour

This customized tour acknowledges the Mississauga of New Credit, the aboriginal nation whose ancestral lands the city is built on, and highlights the struggles, gains and losses of women in the city’s labour and feminist movements from the 1850s up to the present – a history that has been silenced and marginalized. We bring back to life vibrant and committed women union leaders like Grace Hartman and Madeleine Parent; artists like Paraskeva Clark; international figures like Emma Goldman and Amelia Earhart, and lesser-known Toronto women like Lily Ilomaki and Annie Buller, Depression-era union organizers and Communists. The tour celebrates the work of women in unions, the arts and the community who created the seeds of our social safety net and the Canadian educational system.

The tour is hosted by Mayworks Festival and is led by JP Hornick, Jennifer Huang, Maureen Hynes, Kathryn Payne and Sue Smith.
