Meaning of Maghreb?

Since Muhammad Bouazizi poured petrol over himself because the police seized his vegetable cart, the flames of rebellion have spread not only throughout Tunisia, but also North Africa and the Middle East. On the trail of these events, the central round table conference “New emancipatory struggle,” examines the rearrangement of power in the world, but primarily seeks to emphasize the emancipatory potential of popular movements. Across the globe, from Athens to the barricades in mass protests in London, from the fight of the Indian Naxalites to the Mexican Zapatistas, to the persistent resistance of the countries of Latin America and the reawakening of Africa, are born new emancipatory practices that, despite geographic distances and differences, though some carry the same marker the common denominator. What in this context can we learn from the Maghreb, and what do we do?

The Maghreb, is the western region of North Africa, and includes six countries: Morocco, Western Sahara, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Mauritania.
