FilmSocial presents Paul Newman in Slap Shot
Saturday, February 1, 2020 / 7:00 pm - 10:30 pm EST
Slap Shot, the 1977 cult-classic comedy staring Paul Newman, follows a minor-league hockey team struggling to stay afloat in a declining factory town. After the closing of the steel mill, laying off 10,000 workers, the Charlestown Chiefs have to resort to an excessively violent style of play to draw crowds and keep the team from folding. Behind its comedic – and sometimes vulgar – facade, is an interesting exploration of class, violence, sport, and masculinity. Join us at Eyesore cinema for a screening of the film. Following the screening, Simon Black (Assistant Professor of Labour Studies at Brock University) will lead a discussion of the politics of the film.
