SUMMARY:Seniors’ Climate Witness
DESCRIPTION:Canada is at a crossroads. Even as fossil fuel-driven wildfires force thousands of people from their homes and harm millions across Canada and around the world\, the federal government is planning to spend tens of billions of public dollars on new fossil fuel pipelines while backtracking on key climate commitments\, and disrespecting Indigenous rights. \nThis September\, Seniors’ Climate Witness will bring together seniors\, people of faith\, and allies in a national climate witness culminating in Ottawa during the opening of Parliament. Together\, we will call on the Government of Canada to reject new fossil fuel pipelines\, uphold its climate commitments\, respect Indigenous rights\, and invest instead in a safe\, clean and livable future for our children\, grandchildren\, and future generations. \nsign-up \nIt will make several stops across the country\, culminating in Ottawa during the opening of Parliament.

SUMMARY:Rally and March for Migrant Justice
DESCRIPTION:Migrants make Canada work. We care for children and elders\, grow food\, build homes\, and keep communities running. \nBut the government is pushing migrants out instead of giving people equal rights. Permits are expiring\, being refused\, cancelled\, or made impossible to renew. Refugees are under attack. People are being deported. Families are being separated. Those who remain are forced to work with fewer rights and more fear. \nAt the same time\, working class people are being squeezed by high rents\, low wages\, service cuts\, and insecurity. Migrants are being blamed for a crisis created by underfunding\, privatization\, corporate greed\, and governments that put the rich first. \nSunday\, September 20\, 2026\, 2:00 PM\nChristie Pits Park\, 750 Bloor West\, Toronto

SUMMARY:Mine\, Baby\, Mine
DESCRIPTION:More mines – lithium\, copper\, nickel\, tungsten\, etc. – being pitched as the solution to multiple problems – the economy\, national sovereignty and security\, and even the climate crisis. Mines are touted as nation-building projects and sources of critical strategic metals essential for national defense while the U.S. Department of War has pumped more than a total $78 million into different mines in Canada\, including $15 million for the proposed Sisson tungsten and molybdenum mine\, 60 km from Fredericton. Mines are also sources of transition metals needed for electric vehicles and renewable energy. \nHear a critical take on mining as the cure-all solution to various crises of our times. What are the downsides of more mining? Who benefits from mining? Who loses? How can communities push back against proposed mining projects? Are there other solutions to today’s most pressing problems that are worthy of more exploration and support? \nRodrigue Turgeon in conversation with Alain Deneault\nWhen: Thursday\, September 24\, 2026\, 7:00pm – 8:30pm (Atlantic Time)\nWhere: Ted Daigle Auditorium\, Edmund Casey Hall\, St. Thomas University\, 51 Dineen Dr.\, Fredericton\, NB

SUMMARY:Solidarity Is Strength
DESCRIPTION:From the Ontario Days of Action to Building the Fight Against Ford \nAll are invited to participate in Solidarity is Strength\, an organizing event reflecting on a defining chapter of Ontario’s history and what lessons we can carry forward to fight today’s austerity agenda. The event will include a conversation with Paul Kellogg\, author of Austerity and Resistance: the Ontario Days of Action\, 1995-1998\, as well other labour leaders\, rank and file education workers\, and prominent activists. \nA big fight is brewing over public education thanks to dedicated workers who’ve been reviving deep organizing methods. Education Workers’ see that their power and leverage is as a province-wide\, strategically situated and coordinated group providing a highly valued public service. \nBroad solidarity from across sectors\, unions\, and locals\, can make this fight unstoppable. In the process of defending our public schools and kids’ futures – a foundational issue for the entire working class – we also build a crucial wedge and the blueprint for a very different Ontario. \nWhen: Saturday September 26\nTime: 10am-4pm\, check-in at 9:30am.\nWhere: College Street United Church\, 454 College Street\, Toronto ON.\nHow: Please preregister online

SUMMARY:Introduction to Socialism
DESCRIPTION:Curious about socialism? Interested about if it is really possible and taking a sober look at the problems it will face? Want to discuss how to begin affecting change right now? \nIn these uncertain and dangerous times\, The Leo Panitch School for Socialist Education is a space to listen\, discuss and challenge the contemporary relevancy of socialism. \nThe School’s flagship course\, Introduction to Socialism\, is designed for both those experienced activists always looking to learn more\, and those newer to socialist ideas and full of questions. It will not only provide a unique venue for collectively tackling important topics\, but also a welcoming space where any question relevant to socialist organizing\, no matter how basic or advanced\, can be raised and discussed. \nInstead of providing exact definitions and historical readings\, the course will focus on understanding the structures of capitalism in order to challenge it and begin building a better world. We will rely on the ideas and lived experience of participants to enhance the presentations\, examples\, and collective discussions that make up each session. \nOver 8 weeks we’ll explore topics such as what and who is the working class\, what makes socialism different\, how we can overcome political barriers\, how socialists can approach elections and winning reforms in the existing state\, what role trade unions and political parties have played for working class struggles\, and much more! \nWhen: Sunday September 27\, weekly until November 22. All classes 2:30-5pm (skipping Thanksgiving weekend)\nWhere: Jubilee United Church – 6000 Sussex Ave\, Burnaby\, BC V5H 3C2\nWho: Anyone and everyone curious about socialism!

SUMMARY:Socialism and Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:The Leo Panitch School for Socialist Education is thrilled to be supporting the latest edition of Socialism and Capitalism organized by Socialist Project Fredericton. This is a new version of the course\, now held over one weekend! \nOver the two days we will examine the historical development of socialism as a response to the continual evolution of capitalism. We ask: “What is socialism now and how did we get here?” And we ask: “What is capitalism now and how has it changed?” All the while we trace the evolution of socialism as an analytical and political paradigm responding to the harmful and often violent effects of capitalism. Throughout our journey we will stress that the essence of socialism involves the desire to get beyond the horrors and trauma caused by capitalism. \nThis course will run 9:00am-5:30pm on October 17 and 9:00am-1:30pm on October 18. Participants are encouraged to attend the entire weekend\, if able! Venue details will be shared with registrants in the weeks leading up to the course.

SUMMARY:Canadian Healthcare Today
DESCRIPTION:Since its inception\, Canadian healthcare has provided the vast majority of Canadians with medical services free at the point of care and provided by both public and private actors. However\, this system has long faced compounding challenges\, including: cost-containment\, chronic health human resource shortages\, prolonged wait times and the rise of “hallway medicine\,” and systemic racism in healthcare delivery. \nOver the last few decades\, these challenges have increased as federal and provincial governments have clawed back funding\, laid off workers\, and the use of new forms of private\, corporate actors to fill gaps in care. \nThis educational panel event\, hosted by the Leo Panitch School for Socialist Education\, brings together health system researchers and public healthcare advocates to shed light on these critical developments and how we can push back on privatization and systemic racism within our healthcare system. \nWhen: November 6 – Doors: 6:30pm\, Start: 7:00pm\nWhere: Owl’s Club\, 847 Dovercourt Road\, Toronto ON\nCost: Free/by donation

SUMMARY:Fighting to Win
DESCRIPTION:Unions and social movements today are operating under incredibly dire circumstances. There is great economic uncertainty and we confront the worsening impact of climate change as well as a global situation marked by the growing threat of conflict and war. When workers strike or communities under attack take to the streets\, it seems that victories are much harder to win and past gains more difficult to defend. \nThis course will grapple with these questions by looking at the forms of exploitation and oppression that exist in society and the means by which the power structure acts to limit and contain our struggles. The course will move towards a discussion of how our movements can overcome the factors that hold them back and to fight to win! \nWhen – Thursday November 12\, weekly until December 3. All classes 6-8pm\nWhere -Downtown Toronto – Venue shared with registrants\nHow – Advance registration required\nCost – Free/recommended donation $20

SUMMARY:Booklaunch: Lenin's Comintern Revisited
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the launch of the soft-cover version of John Riddell’s Lenin’s Comintern Revisited (Haymarket Books)\, and discuss lessons from the period of the Communist International for today’s movements and struggles. \nThe Communist International (or ‘Comintern’) was launched in 1919 to promote worldwide extension of the 1917 workers’ and peasants’ revolution in Russia. During the Comintern’s first years under the leadership of V.I. Lenin\, it proposed and tested strategic and tactical concepts that retain their value and continue to be studied. While the Communist International was soon to be deformed and destroyed by the rise of bureaucracy and authoritarianism associated with Stalinism\, its perspective on the fight for international revolutionary change still presents a compelling vision\, and is an inspiring example for millions throughout the world. \nLenin’s Comintern Revisited is the latest volume in the Comintern publishing project and another monumental achievement for John\, his co-editor Mike Taber\, and all those involved in preserving this important part of revolutionary history. It represents the culmination of a decades-long project to make available the proceedings of the congresses of the Communist International (comintern) held during Lenin’s time. \nWhen: November 21 – Doors open: 1:30pm\, Event start: 2:00pm\nWhere: College Street United Church\, 454 College Street\, Toronto
