SUMMARY:FilmSocial: The Organizer
DESCRIPTION:The Leo Panitch School for Socialist Education is very pleased to present The Organizer (1963) as the next film in the FilmSocial series of socialist film screenings. \nSet in Turin\, Italy at the turn of the 20th century\, the story follows the workers of a textile factory\, one of whom suffers a serious injury caused by exhaustion at the end of 14-hour shift. When workers stage a walk out after the factory owners refuse to shorten the work day\, determination wanes as they begin to fear for their jobs and return to their work benches. It’s not until a labour activist (Marcello Mastroianni) on the run from Genoan police appears and passionately shares from past organizing experience that the workers are emboldened to go on strike\, and in the process begin to understand the sacrifices that come with holding their ground. \nWhen: Wednesday February 25th @6:45pm\nWhere: Eyesore Cinema\, 1176 Bloor St W\, Toronto\nWho: All are welcome! Free registration is recommended.

SUMMARY:Oil\, Capitalism\, and Climate
DESCRIPTION:All are invited to join us for the annual Leo Panitch Winter Lecture! We are honoured to welcome esteemed author and academic Adam Hanieh back to Toronto to deliver this year’s talk. \nThis event marks the fourth edition of the school’s annual lecture\, held in the memory of the late Leo Panitch. \nAdam Hanieh will discuss how understanding oil’s place in world capitalism is key to grasping geopolitical dynamics and global finance\, reviving vital climate struggles\, and challenging the structural interests underpinning the system itself. He will also explore the connections between our fossil-fuel centred world and the contemporary politics of Palestine and the wider Middle East. \nAt a time when the world’s attention is being pulled in myriad directions by ongoing genocide\, threats of war\, economic instability\, and rising authoritarianism\, the role that resources such as oil play in global politics often go under-noticed. Amidst this chaos\, governments and capital are massively expanding fossil fuel investment\, leaving us to face a worldwide ecological crisis that is set to only hasten in the coming years. \nOil itself is woven into the fabric of this modern world in obvious but also surprising ways. Much more than an energy source or transport fuel\, oil has a foundational place in all aspects of contemporary life – no challenge to the fossil fuel industry can be effective without taking this fact seriously. Oil greases the wheels of global capitalism. The world’s oil and gas trade is also rapidly changing\, bringing with it shifting economic interdependencies across the Middle East and East Asia. \nWhen – Friday 27 February – doors open: 6:30pm\, talk starts 7pm\, social to follow\nWhere – College Street United Church – 454 College Street\, Toronto ON\nHow – Advance registration required. SUMMARY:Socialism and Capitalism - SP Fredericton
DESCRIPTION:The Leo Panitch School for Socialist Education is thrilled to be supporting a brand new course: Socialism and Capitalism organized by the Fredericton Committee of the Socialist Project. The course represents the very first Leo Panitch School program on the east coast! \nOur 8-week course examines the historical development of socialism as a response to the continual evolution of capitalism. We ask: “What is socialism now and how did we get here?” And we ask: “What is capitalism now and how has it changed?” All the while we trace the evolution of socialism as an analytical and political paradigm responding to the harmful and often violent effects of capitalism. Throughout our journey we will stress that the essence of socialism involves the desire to get beyond the horrors\, misery\, and trauma caused by capitalism. \nClick here for course outline\nClick here to register \nWhen: Monday evenings at 7pm beginning March 16.\nWhere: In person in Fredericton\, NB – Venue to be shared with registrants

SUMMARY:FilmSocial Presents: Norma Rae
DESCRIPTION:The Leo Panitch School for Socialist Education is very pleased to present Norma Rae (1979) as the next film in the FilmSocial series of socialist film screenings. \nSet in a small-town Southern textile mill\, the film follows Norma Rae (Sally Field)\, a courageous worker and single mother\, who becomes politically active in her workplace after meeting Reuben Warshowsky (Ron Liebman)\, a charismatic New York labor organizer who arrives in town to confront crushing employment conditions at the factory and help workers form their own union. After her father dies suddenly on the mill floor\, Norma is thrown deeper into the struggle\, risking her job\, relationships\, and community standing to confront the bosses and organise her often-reluctant coworkers. \nDirected by Martin Ritt\, who was blacklisted himself during the Red Scare\, this Oscar-winning film is based on the real story of Crystal Lee Sutton\, who was one of three generations of her family to work at J.P. Stevens & Company mills in Burlington\, North Carolina\, and went on to become a celebrated ACTWU organizer. Often emotionally raw and unvarnished\, Norma Rae’s struggle to build solidarity at the plant is both personal and political as she navigates the intersections of race\, class\, and gender\, and bravely stands up for what she believes is right. The film culminates with the union election\, delivering one of the most iconic and electrifying scenes of 1970s American working-class cinema. \nWednesday March 25th – Doors: 6:45pm\nEyesore Cinema\, 1176 Bloor St W\, Toronto\nFree/PWYC

SUMMARY:Confronting the Far-Right
DESCRIPTION:The Leo Panitch School is pleased to present “Confronting the Far-Right: Lessons from Italy and Spain.” We are honoured to welcome Clara Serra and Salvatore Prinzi to Toronto to lead us in a discussion of this vital topic. Clara and Salvatore are both activists\, authors\, and philosophers\, experienced in movements confronting the rise of the far-right in Spain and Italy\, respectively. \nHow did the rise of the contemporary far-right come about in Southern Europe? How are left and anti-fascist movements responding to this? What lessons can the socialist left in Canada take from the experiences of Italy and Spain? \nThe Spanish and Italian movements against the right have taken a number of expected as well as more experimental forms. Clara and Salvatore will lead us in a discussion of what they’ve witnessed and participated in. This will range from the effects of the decline of the traditional social democratic parties\, to the role of mutual aid\, to new and creative forms of community activation. They will also discuss the role of feminism in fighting the growth of the far-right\, and how socialist feminism becoming a hegemonic political ideal may be the key to turning young men away from fascism. \nAbout the speakers: \n\nClara Serra is a philosopher and feminist from Madrid. In 2013\, she was a representative of Podemos in the Madrid Assembly until 2019. She is a member of the feminist network Alianzas Rebeldes. Clara has written on a number topics\, including feminist strategy\, politics\, and most recently\, consent.\nSalvatore Prinzi was one of the founders of Ex OPG in 2015 and later Potere al Popolo. He has published works on numerous topics\, including social class\, Italian politics\, and fascism. He is currently conducting new work around the issue of the minimum wage in Italy.\n\nThis event is being organized by the Leo Panitch School for Socialist Education\, with support from the Socialist Project and the Global Labour Research Centre. \nWhen: Monday 27 April – doors open: 6:30pm\, talk starts 7pm\, social to follow\nWhere: College Street United Church – 502 Bathurst Street\, Toronto ON\nHow: Advance registration required. SUMMARY:A Worker is a Worker — May Day Forum
DESCRIPTION:To mark International Workers’ Day\, we gather across New Brunswick to affirm a simple truth: a worker is a worker\, no matter where we come from or what immigration status we hold. \nAt a time when racism\, xenophobia\, and anti-migrant policies are being used to divide workers\, these May Day forums will bring together migrant justice organizers from Minneapolis and New Brunswick and you to name divide-and-rule strategies and organize against them. \nInstead of addressing rising rents\, low wages\, crumbling public services\, and deepening inequality\, politicians are turning to deportation\, enforcement\, and Trump-style immigration policies like Bill C-12. Migrants are being scapegoated so that the people most responsible for this crisis can escape accountability. We refuse that divide. \nFeaturing Aizar Cabrera from the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee\, who will speak about the ongoing fight for survival in Minneapolis and how migrant communities are building solidarity in the face of escalating attacks. \n\nFriday\, May 1\, 2026\, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM\nViscount Kitchen – Pinoy Fiesta\, 435 King St.\, Fredericton\nSaturday\, May 2\, 2026\, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM\nVenue/location: TBD\, Moncton

SUMMARY:Education Under Siege
DESCRIPTION:Ontario’s higher education sector is at a breaking point. From the systematic marketization of colleges and universities to the sustained attack on labour rights\, the provincial government’s strategy is clear: treat education as a commodity rather than a social good. \nJoin us for a political discussion as we analyze the Ford government’s maneuvers—including the devastating shift from OSAP grants to loans\, the manufactured “international student crisis\,” and the broader austerity agenda threatening social equality. \nWe will explore strategies for a labour and community-led response\, highlighting ongoing student and labour fightbacks and providing a direct opportunity for attendees to plug into the organizing work necessary to defend\, expand\, and decommodify our public institutions. \nThis event is open to all\, especially people who work or study at a college or university. The discussion is a part of the ongoing Higher Education Workers’ campaign of the Socialist Project. If you work at a higher education institution\, we’d love to get you involved in the campaign! \nThis event is being supported by the Leo Panitch School for Socialist Education as a part of its ongoing series of educational discussions on current labour and political struggles.

SUMMARY:FilmSocial: Finally Got the News
DESCRIPTION:Finally Got The News is a documentary that shows the activities of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers inside and outside the auto factories of Detroit. Through interviews with the members of the movement\, footage shot in the auto plants\, and footage of leafleting and picketing actions\, the film documents their efforts to build an independent black labor organization that will respond to worker’s problems\, such as the assembly line speed-up and inadequate wages faced by both black and white workers in the industry. \nThe film was directed by members of Newsreel\, a radical filmmaking collective formed in New York City in 1967. The filmmakers were drawn to Detroit after hearing about DRUM (Dodge Revolutionary Union Movement)\, a group of revolutionary workers in the main Dodge factory. DRUM had carried out successful strikes and inspired similar groups in other factories. DRUM eventually merged with other groups to form the League of Revolutionary Black Workers. \nWhat makes Finally Got The News distinctive is that it makes explicit the message that it will be the working class that will make and lead the revolution. It was also one of the few films that was made under the direct control of working class black people with the purpose of radicalizing other black workers.

Accumulation in the Ruins puzzles through the rubble left behind after decades of rampant neoliberalism. \n\nWhat kind of world order is now emerging?\nIs capitalism entering a terminal crisis\, or being violently reconstituted?\nHow is American empire being reshaped from Palestine to New York?\nAnd what possibilities remain for socialist politics in an age of ecological breakdown\, geopolitical fracture\, and resurgent authoritarianism?\n\nIbrahim Shikaki\, Costas Lapavitsas and Paul Heideman\, three contributors to this year’s Socialist Register volume\, will consider these and other question in conversation with co-editor Steve Maher and the new editor of Monthly Review Press\, Arun Kundnani. \nThursday May 28th\, 5:30pm at the People’s Forum\, New York. \nLate-Stage Capitalism? SUMMARY:Book Launch: Confronting the Resurgent Right
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of Confronting the Resurgent Right. Scholars and activists take Canada’s 2022 “Freedom Convoy” as a recent manifestation of deep-rooted extremism and provide intersectional commentary on the resurgence of the political right\, demonstrating how its ideology permeates and shapes the structures of our society. \nWith evidence-based research\, and careful analysis of the genesis and methods of the right\, contributors to this volume model pathways of resistance and charge us with our most urgent collective tasks: finding ways to work together\, building coalitions in civil society\, and exposing and countering the regressive forces that spew hate. \nThe evening features a panel discussion about the book’s themes with the editor\, Miriam Edelson\, and contributors Peter Smith\, Tim McCaskell\, Judy Rebick and John Cartwright followed by Q&A.

SUMMARY:A Crash Course on Colonialism\, Capitalism\, and the History of Canada
DESCRIPTION:How and why did colonialism develop in the regions that became Canada? What role did capitalism play in the coming of colonialism? What effect did this have on indigenous peoples and in what was the role of anti-colonial struggle? \nWhat can the history of these and other resistance movements tell us about the possibility of a better future? How did class struggles that challenged capitalism develop? What was their relationship to indigenous opposition to colonialism? \nIn this introductory course\, we will be engaging critically with these and many other aspects of colonialism and Canadian history. The history of colonialism and modern injustice against indigenous people is rightly a motivating issue for many. The structures and systems that led to such monumental injustices must be understood\, especially by those who believe that a fundamentally better world is possible. So\, too\, it is crucial to understand the exploitation and oppression endured by working people as Canada became an advanced capitalist nation state. \nAll are warmly invited to join us for this special 4-part series\, led by renowned historian\, author\, and professor\, Bryan Palmer. The course will be largely based on Palmer’s recent three volume series examining colonialism\, capitalism\, and the legacy of Canada’s past. For an overview of the series\, please see this excellent interview with Palmer conducted by Adam King of the Maple. \nEach session will feature a lecture\, followed by discussion and group exercises. No previous knowledge of the subject or formal education required! \nWhen: Sunday afternoons at 2pm: June 21\, June 28\, July 5\, and July 12.\nWhere: Downtown Toronto – Venue to be shared with registrants\nCost: Free – $10/session donation suggested\nHow: Registration required

SUMMARY:FilmSocial: I Am Cuba
DESCRIPTION:The Leo Panitch School for Socialist Education is very pleased to present I Am Cuba (1964) as the first entry in the FilmSocial series showcasing films on Cuba. It is more important than ever to keep attention on Cuba and the suffering experienced by the Cuban people due to US aggression. \nI Am Cuba was the first co-production between the Soviet Union and Cuba led by regular collaborators Mikhail Kalatozov (director) and Sergey Urusevsky (cinematographer) who had previously won the Palme d’Or in 1958 for their film The Cranes Are Flying. The film follows four distinct stories about the Cuban population that chronicles Cuba’s ascent from colonialist degradation and the authoritarian rule of Batista’s regime to a revolution that spreads across the country. \nThe film was not well received by either Cuban or Soviet audiences when it originally premiered in 1964 and. The film was pulled quickly from theatres and largely forgotten until it was re-discovered and rescued by American filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola 30 years later. Since then it has gotten a new appreciation\, especially for its dazzling images.

SUMMARY:Mass Incarceration in El Salvador
DESCRIPTION:What is going on in El Salvador and how does this matter to Canada? \nIn March 2022 the Nayib Bukele administration in El Salvador invoked an emergency measure called a “state of exception” in reaction to a spike in gang violence. \nUnder the pretext of protecting public order\, this measure suspends freedoms of assembly\, association\, and expression\, as well as fundamental rights surrounding arrest and detention. These include the right of habeas corpus\, the right to be informed of the reasons for detention\, access to legal assistance\, and numerous guarantees of due process. \nThough the Constitution allows for such exceptional measures on a temporary basis\, the state of exception has been renewed continuously on a monthly basis\, making it a permanent security policy. It is also wielded as a tool of repression against environmental defenders\, human rights workers\, lawyers\, journalists\, political opposition members\, and others. \nOver 91\,000 people have been imprisoned under the emergency regime\, making El Salvador’s incarceration rate the highest in the world at 2% of the population. \nThere has been a dramatic drop in gang-perpetrated murders\, but at the cost of a human rights catastrophe. National and international organizations have documented dismaying patterns such as arrests for alleged gang membership with no evidence\, often in poor communities\, persecution and arrest of courageous defenders of human rights\, environment\, and democracy\, severe mistreatment in detention amounting to torture\, and preposterous and cruel collective trials of hundreds at a time on gang-related charges. According to the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) there have been 483 deaths in custody. \nJoin us on August 10\, Prisoners’ Justice Day\, for a panel discussion and educational Q&A session on who is being affected by unjust imprisonment in El Salvador\, and Canada’s stake in the erosion of democracy and human rights in the country. \nOur featured speakers – Samuel Ramirez\, activist with the Movement for the Victims of the Regime in El Salvador (MOVIR) \nOther speakers to be announced.

SUMMARY:FilmSocial presents: Memories of Underdevelopment
DESCRIPTION:The Leo Panitch School for Socialist Education is very pleased to present Memories Of Underdevelopment (1968) as the second film in the new FilmSocial series on Cuba. It is more important than ever to keep attention on Cuba and the crisis it is going through from US aggression. \nMemories Of Underdevelopment was directed by the prolific Cuba director Tomás Gutiérrez Alea. It is Gutiérrez Alea’s most famous work and arguably Cuba’s most acclaimed film. It was elected one of the best film’s of all time in the Sight & Sound 2012 poll. It follows Sergio\, a relatively wealthy writer\, who decides to stay in Cuba after the revolution while his wife and many of his friends choose to leave for Miami. Sergio looks back over the changes in Cuba and the effect of living in what he calls an underdeveloped country. \nGutiérrez Alea’s work is representative of the greater New Latin American Cinema movement occuring in the 1960s and 1970s. Memories Of Underdevelopment is specifically an example of “Imperfect Cinema” which rejected the “perfect” style of Hollywood movies and the “art cinema” of European movies. Imperfect cinema rejects elitism and focuses on the process over the product. The movement’s main goal was to make films where the viewer becomes an active participant. \nWhen: August 28 – Doors: 6:45pm\nWhere: College Street United Church\, Toronto

SUMMARY:Rally and March for Migrant Justice
DESCRIPTION:Migrants make Canada work. We care for children and elders\, grow food\, build homes\, and keep communities running. \nBut the government is pushing migrants out instead of giving people equal rights. Permits are expiring\, being refused\, cancelled\, or made impossible to renew. Refugees are under attack. People are being deported. Families are being separated. Those who remain are forced to work with fewer rights and more fear. \nAt the same time\, working class people are being squeezed by high rents\, low wages\, service cuts\, and insecurity. Migrants are being blamed for a crisis created by underfunding\, privatization\, corporate greed\, and governments that put the rich first. \nSunday\, September 20\, 2026\, 2:00 PM\nChristie Pits Park\, 750 Bloor West\, Toronto

SUMMARY:Understanding Capitalism: An Introduction to Capital
DESCRIPTION:Frustrated with capitalism and its impacts on human beings and the planet? Do you believe that a more equitable\, democratic\, and liberatory society is possible? \nWaking up from the capitalist nightmare requires a clear understanding of what we are up against: how we understand capitalism\, how it works\, and how it compels us to act in certain ways – these all shape what kinds of strategies will be needed to move beyond it. \nThis course will approach these questions and others through An Introduction to the Three Volumes of Karl Marx’s Capital by Michael Heinrich\, one of most approachable and understandable guides through Marx’s masterwork. Capital remains the most important work of critical analysis of capitalism in history\, through its exploration of the economic principles that govern capitalism\, and the problems faced by workers and society. \nWhy not just read Capital directly? Capital is infamously long and difficult! Many aspiring socialist activists over the years have plunged in head first\, only to find the language daunting and the ideas hard to grasp. Heinrich’s book gives a compact\, concise\, and clear presentation of the main points\, providing a solid understanding of how capitalism functions. \nWe will discuss the most common questions raised by Heinrich’s book (and Marx’s three volumes of Capital)\, as well the political and practical relevance of the material today. Understanding capitalism isn’t just an intellectual exercise\, it’s a key part of how we begin to build a better world! \nWhen: Sunday September 20\, weekly until November 8. All classes 2-5pm\nWhere: Toronto ON + Online\nHow: Advance registration required\nCost: Free/recommended donation: $40 \nAll are welcome to this introductory 7-week course. Whether you’re just dipping your toes into socialist politics and full of questions\, or an experienced activist wanting to revisit your understanding of capitalism\, we’d love for you to join us! \nParticipants will be asked to read along as we work our way through a 220 page book over seven weeks. A free PDF or at-cost physical copy of the book will be made available.
