TO: SID RYAN, PRESIDENT CUPE ONTARIOWednesday, June 14, 2006
CUPE ONTARIO EXECUTIVE MEMBERS
KATHERINE NASTOVSKI, CHAIR, CUPE Ontario International Solidarity Committee

SUBJECT: CUPE ONTARIO RESOLUTION N. 50

Dear friends,

The Palestine General Federation of Trade Unions representing about 350 thousands workers in Gaza and West Bank would like to express full support to the Resolution 50 of the Ontario Branch of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), passed on March 27th 2006.

Palestinian civil society and political parties, including the Palestine General Federation of Trade Unions, all over Palestine and in the diaspora have given out on the 9th July 2005 a unified statement calling for international boycott, divestment and sanctions on Israel.

Be assured that our workers welcomed your decision to support this call until Israel meets its obligation to recognize the Palestinians inalienable rights to self-determination and fully complies with the precepts of the international law including the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN resolutions 194.

We want to encourage the members of CUPE and its executive not to hesitate in the implementation of the outlined research and awareness raising process and to do their best to ensure the call for boycott, divestment and sanctions will have concrete effects on the ground.

The Inevitable attacks of the pro-Israel lobby you are facing at the moment should not stop anybody but rather highlight the necessity of a widespread awareness raising campaign on the apartheid nature of the Israeli state and Canadian support for these practices. Your decision shows a strong commitment to international standards of Human Rights and can lead the way for ethical stands against oppression, occupation and racism.

Thanks for your solidarity in this crucial moment and accept our fraternal regards.
